The museum preserves, documents and above all enhances the vast heritage of sacred art belonging to the diocese of Oristano. It covers an area of over a thousand square metres and contains several rooms that house permanent and temporary collections. The Sala San Pio X houses liturgical furnishings, sacred vestments and precious ritual elements ranging from the Middle Ages to the modern age. Of particular note among the works is the dossal Madonna with Child and Saints from the end of the 13th century, probably the first work with a gold background to arrive in Sardinia, which bears witness to the Tuscan Gothic culture inspired by the Franciscan culture. The Liturgical Codices section of the Cathedral of Santa Maria houses some from the late 13th century that feature miniatures of both single figures and historiated initials. Another permanent collection is the collection of over 500 ceramic pieces from Tharros, belonging to the heritage of the Archbishop's Seminary.
